Keyboard Focus and Portal Navigation in the Accessible Theme

All elements within the CVCommunity Viewer user interface are accessible via the keyboard when you set the Accessible user interface theme. CV enables the use of keystrokes to navigate to and from portal elements and to activate menus and functions.

Keyboard focus is the highlighting of portal elements that enables interaction with, and the navigation of, the web application through the keyboard and keystrokes. The portal element in focus is outlined in gold as a visual indicator of keyboard focus. Keyboard focus determines which element, field, or control receives information typed at the keyboard. Pressing the Tab key or the right arrow key, for example, moves the keyboard focus to the next portal field or button.

CV enables the use of Windows keystrokes (Tab, Shift + Tab, arrow keys, Enter), and keyboard shortcuts to move the focus to all menus and activate all functions on the menus. All UIUser Interface items are accessible via the keyboard under the Accessible theme.

NOTE:  If you focus on the element within a widget that has hover text, the text appears after a small delay as if you hovered over the element with a mouse cursor.

Pressing Tab immediately after logging in initiates CV's implementation of skip navigation—a link displayed on the portal titled Skip to Main Content. Pressing Enter any time this element is in focus places the main portal tab in keyboard focus. Pressing Tab while on the Skip to Main Content link takes the focus to the next portal element.

Pressing Enter or the Spacebar when an element that provides action is in keyboard focus performs the associated action. For example, pressing Enter or the Spacebar when the Settings menu button is in focus, opens the CV Settings dialog. In general, pressing the Enter key or the Spacebar when a portal element or button has keyboard focus mimics a mouse click. Using the arrow keys or the Tab key allows you to move between keyboard focus items to navigate through portal elements. The Alt + 4 or Alt + 5 are unique keystrokes enabled in CV. Use Alt + 4 to jump directly to the top or main field in a pane or dialog box. Use Alt + 5 on a page with two unique left- and right-side panes to toggle between the panes.

The following table summarizes keystrokes and other portal keyboard navigation options available within the Accessible theme.
